With over 250 million fish and chip meals sold each year from over 10,500 shops across the UK, fish and chips remains the nation's favourite takeaway. This year, 10 of the UK's best chippies have been battling it out to win Independent Takeaway Fish & Chip Shop of the Year at the National Fish & Chip Awards. The shops were assessed on a wide variety of judging criteria including; product quality, customer service, food preparation procedures, hygiene, innovation, staff training and development, promotional activity and approaches to sustainable sourcing. The best I've ever tasted is from Anstruther Fish Bar on th East Fife coast - absolutely gorgeous... light crispy batter and fluffy chips - no grease in sight! Well worth a visit if you're ever in the area!

The best fish n chips are definitely in the north of England. I have just moved to the south and they are disgusting here. The haddock is tiny and has skin and scales on it! The fish and chips are ultra greasy. There is no chance of having a 'butty' because they don't sell bread. They don't even sell mushy peas, curry sauce, beans or gravy! However for some reason it seems to be common to find pizzas and burgers in the shops down here in Hampshire... Indeed, Murgatroyds in Yeadon or Empire / Kingfishers in Wakefield - incredible fish n chips with a chunky haddock (and no skin!!!!). I love driving back to Yorkshire just for a proper fish n chips :)

The Magpie in Whitby...Always a queue outside to get in...I tried to take the haddock challenge in there one day but the waitress wouldn't serve it to me on the grounds that I looked as if I wouldn't be able to finish the dish....Salemanship at it's finest.

May I remind some people good Fish & Chips are not cook in lard!!! The traditional way is in fact beef fat!

I EAT FISH AND CHIPS. However, heavy duty commercial fishing started around 60 years ago. In that time man has depleted ALL of the earth's oceans by an incredible 90% of its fish stocks of the levels they were at in 1950. We only continue to catch because of our technology. World stock has plummeted.

Eat fish and enjoy fish if you want, but please ask your fish shop / store if the fish is from sustainable sources, backed by the Marine Conservation Society. Some of these chip shops follow this code, others do not. I want to be eating fish years from now with my children, but the truth is that unless we change the way we harvest these fish, they really will be gone in my lifetime. I am 30 years old. If we only buy sustainable then there will be less market for non sustainable and in turn our oceans can improve.

There are too many points to list here but please research. The film 'The End Of The Line' also the same title . com Find out for yourself how critical things are. Sustainable is the important thing.

 I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU HAVE ONLY ONE SCOTTISH CHIPPER, ARGUABLY THE BST FISH IN THE UK IS LANDED IN SCOTLAND. ARBROATH HAS TWO FIRST CLASS CHIPPERS, PEPO'S AND MARCO'S BOTH WITHIN 100 METERS OF WHERE THE FISH IS LANDED, YOU SHOULD ALL TRY IT!!

I think the best fish and chips are in yorkshire, probably because they still cook in dripping as did Harry ramsden, once they changed to oil they quickly went down hill,  a little known secret is Maggies in Hastings, she has a cafe above the fish market on the beach the huge fish is cooked fresh and you need to book well in advance to get a seat.

The best fish and chips I've had in years was last year - Pinnacles in Seahouses, Northumberland.  A truly gut-gorging experience!

 

Having previously lived in London for 10 years, I'm delighted to see that none have made the list.  I was on self-imposed exile from my favourite dish because the quality ranged from god-awful to marginally edible.  That, and often being charged often over a tenner for the privilage at arrogant 'gastro-chippies'.

 

To be fair, well done to MSN for once for publishing a third party top ten, rather than their usual self-proclaimed listing.  The hacks would have put at least 5 of the 10 in London, with the odd token 'surprisingly good' chippy they visited on a weekend escape to Dorset / Norfolk.

I cant believe not even 1 chippie from grimsby made it into the top ten. Steels in grimsby should be at least have been there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!​

The best fish & chips in whitby are at Gatsbys near the bridge. Crisp batter on fresh fish and chunky well cooked chips. The service is great the portions huge and great value for money.

You haven't been to St Martin's Isles of Scilly, Where Adam catches the fish himself & potatoes are grown on the family farm. Not to be missed

I have always enjoyed my fish and chips when I have visited Yorkshire but other chip shops are good too. I have found sometimes a fish is better one day than another even from the same shop. You have to get it straight from the fat so it isn't overcooked. The biggest portion I have ever encountered was in Mytha Tydfil last summer. One portion was so massive you could feed a family of about 5 or 6. Very cheap as well, check it out if your in Wales.

If the Seafare fish and chip shop in Guildford is amongst the ten best shops in the country then it's no wonder the British people are going to junk food outlets more. I have used this shop when visiting my father who lives nearby. Its not a very good fish and chip shop at all. You wonder how shops like this even get amoungst the votes. I travel around the country with work and have tried many fish and chip shops. I can easily think of Ten shops better than Seafare.

Huh, those chips dont even look cooked and im sure that fish just wriggled come to think of it. I know a top chip when I see it, and that be not it.
