Lasan
Voted the country's best local restaurant in the latest series of the F Word, Lasan's chef Aktar Islam was hailed as a culinary genius by Gordon Ramsay, who said that his confidence in the kitchen reminded him of himself. If you're still tempted to visit, you can sample the dishes which won the shouty Scot over, but the menu has more to offer the adventurous diner. Clever combinations like spiced roast venison with butternut squash, and mango and almond crumble suggest there'll be no need for Gordon to return with his Kitchen Nightmares team any time soon.
Lasan can be found at 3-4 Dakota Buildings, James Street, St Paul's Square, Birmingham B3 1SD, 0121 212 3664

A bit skewed don't you think?
Yet again Leicester has been totally ignored as a venue for good food, and this despite the fact that Leicester has some absolutely excellent curry houses which regularly get ranked highly in nationwide competitions.
But then, most people don't seem to realise that Leicester even exists? The lifestyle in Leicester/Leicestershire is great - we have great, affordable restaurants, comedy festivals, carnivals, historical venues, visitor attractions, e.g., National Space Centre, great shopping centres, theatres, lots of different ways of keeping fit, etc., etc.,.
However, maybe it's a good thing people don't know too much about Leicester. Do we really want tourists galore?
