You'll have no doubt heard London 'gourmands' discussing how there's 'nowhere decent to eat in the UK outside Soho and Mayfair' as if the nation's capital city was the final word in cuisine. Yet these days nothing could be further from the truth, with some of the best places to eat in the country nowhere near the bustling metropolis. Here's just a small selection of 10 restaurants outside London that aren't just decent, but are some of the finest in the land...

Another shoddy article from MSN with the locations not given for about half the restaurants.

So, the Walnut Tree is the best restaurant in Wales. Well why don't you tell us where it is - Its near  Llanddewi  SKIRRID, on the B4521, two miles East of Abergavenny

Well go to the Tontine on the A19 just south of Middlesbrough, it's been voted the top restuarant in Britain more times thean any of those mentioned, why it's not on the list I just don't know!!!!!

Please could you add at least the post code of each restaurant that you have recommended!!!!

Re: The Walnut Tree...

All you state is that it is "Wales".... No town, no county !!!

I think your comments about Gidleigh Park are a little off the mark. It was under the guidance of Shaun Hill back in the early 1980's who put this place on the map, before moving onto Ludlow and now finally proving how good he is still, at the Walnut Tree.

My ( step ) daughter and her husband run the restaurant on the Isle of Canna  ( nr skye )  the food she cooks is incredibly good and the restaurant is full almost every night. The rich stop off for dinner rather than stay on their boats and the visitors book has nothing but high praise in it. I'd say thats well out of the metropolis.  sadly it,s not open in winter so they turn it into a cafe' but the soups and cakes are out of this world, so to speak.......

Try the Smarden Bell, in Smarden, Ashford, Kent, TN27 8PW. All the food is freshly made on site, including their bread etc.. Local produce, brilliant food and fantastic value....

And likewise, a bit more info on Sat Bains in Nottingham, which is admittedly a bit more tricky to find.

I had to get a taxi there from the centre of Nottingham as I never would have found it otherwise! Definitely worth the effort though

Here's a bit more info on L'Enclume, which is in the village of Cartmel in Cumbria, not too far from the racecourse.

I have eaten at L'Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria and it was absolutely the worst Michelin starred meal I have ever eaten, and I have had dozens  -  did that sound a bit pretentious?  In contrast Holbeck Ghyll Windermere and Northcote Manor Langho are consistently excellent..

I have been. Shaun Hill is just as good as he was at The Merchant Rooms and Gidleigh Park before then. Its worth going out of one's way to get there. In short the sort of food one could find in a Michelin restaurant but at only 1/3rd the price.

Drakes Restaurant in Ripley, Surrey is probably one of the best I have had the pleasure to visit. The food experience is second to none,.

What's the point of this review if you do not give the full address of each. A phone number too - perhaps.  Crazy.
