This retro classic was named to celebrate the marriage of Queen Victoria's granddaughter, Princess Victoria of Hesse-Darmstadt to Prince Louis of Battenberg in 1884. The four coloured quarters represent the four Battenberg princes - Louis, Alexander, Henry and Francis. The family changed its name to Mountbatten in 1917 (due to the war with Germany) but the popular cake's name stuck.
