The Marble Arch and its attendant brewery looks to be one of those overnight successes, until you find out that it's already been going for 10 years!

A real beer geek favourite, the pub itself is truly gorgeous, with weird sloping floors (my best guess is that it used to be an abattoir) and stunning tile work that truly complements the stunning beers.

The aptly-named nettle-noted Pint is the house supping ale, alongside the nutty Manchester Bitter, but my personal favourite is its Ginger, a fiery rendition of the oft-abused style of beer, that's really rather good when mixed with the Chocolate, two parts choc to one part ginger - but maybe that's just me!

Good to know:
Gorgeous interior
Friendly locals
Great food

wey hey,

good on ya pal, guess what i already do brew my own. Dont,t care what the goverment says you aint taking my pint away from me, i deserve it. I work dam hard for it, ill say that again i work dam hard for my money.  Not everyone wants to go silly cycling and jogging through the town centre just to show off. Some of us want to relax and enjoy life at a steady pace and that is good enough a life for us, so cheers to the drinkers.

I love a good quality pint, so do me pals and lasses. Great company and great conversation also, none of that call centre rubbish and office crap. Just a good conversation amongst friends and good laughs all round, god bless ya.

Fat Cat in Sheffield. So good you find their beers in major supermarkets.

This article is bone idle journalism. What did you do look through Yell for london?

I wonder how many of the younger crowd  drink real ale or bitter ? . I  used to drink  many of our local beers but so many have been taken over by bigger breweries it's hard to keep track .

The taste has changed that much over the years I don't blame people for drinking lager , the taste seems more constant over  different parts of the country . Most of our older crowd used to go out 2 or 3 times a week and  the odd afternoon , but since the smoking ban , it's down to the odd  summer  Friday or Saturday . Cans & bottles, are I think  the norm in front of the t.v. and in years to come you will have to travel to find a old fashioned pub . It will be another bit of  old Britain to have gone the way of the dodo  in 20-30 years .

And it's better for you, rather than being filled with god knows what chemicals the big brewers shove in there to make you drink/spend more. I'll stick to my real ale, thanks very much. And a warm hello to all of you who have discovered taste in a pint glass.

London-centric again - forget London. There's a whole other country out there!

@ frank

On the contrary....tolerance and good will very much my attitude!  It's just I much prefer visiting pubs and restaurants for a good night and not coming home stinking of stale second hand smoke and with a sore throat.  I do not miss the days of smokey pubs I'm afraid.  Commonsense says the preference of the minority should not be permitted to impact on the comfort and health of the majority.

That said... happy christmas!

if you want a decent bottled beer try Marstons Old Empire available in usual supermarkets...superb stuff.

i agree,

there is to many do gooders in this country,  time to get the pubs open again and have some normal conversation and good times. None of this false rubbish we see everywhere, that aint living at all, that is living like you are on your nerves edge.  We need good pubs and good times back and i bet you it does come back, in fact i know it will come back. As we have learnt to many people are obsessed with money you have gone mad with money it has consumed you completely and sent you right off the rails. Good thing i saw what labour was going to do to the credit system, hey hey eyyyy labour you did,nt ge me, ((((((( sticking me tongue out ))))),,,, yep thats right some of us know when to stear clear of idiots like you.

Raise ya pint for the strength of the good honest Englishman and women god bless ya, yep im poor, yep im havent got a lot in me pockets, but by hook or by crook im going to live my life in a good old kness style, if you want ot send the world in depths of doom get on with it, because no matter what i say or other good people, you will never listen what so every.

Cheers to all teh drinkers and good common folk who do all the hard graft and back breaking work, with out us they would be nothing.

The Baltic Fleet in Liverpool have been brewing their own beer for many a year, the Wapping Brewery has a very good reputation and like the Marble in Manchester is one of my favourites, well worth a visit.

The Marble Arch has been one of my favourites for more years than i care to disclose. Also try, THE STAR in Higher Broughton, Salford 7. A community owned public house with it's own brewery on the premises, BAZENS Brewery. Bazens is a well established local brewing company with several awards to it's credit. HIGHLY recommended. Richard and Jude of Bazens are faulous people and totally commited to their brewing.

Hi there, I just wanted to respond to some of the comments on here about my piece, Melissa

@Henry Pearson - the Belvoir has a tasting cellar it's not a brew pub that's why it wasn't considered for inclusion, but thanks for bringing to everyone's attention, nice to share info

@Mark Gill the demographic of beer drinkers has shifted considerably, the people I see at my tastings and discovering real ale in particular, as well as the plethora of world beers out there is much younger. There are also more breweries in the UK now than at any time since WWII, real ale is on the rise again, the industry figures also back this up, be optimistic! :)

@Phyllis Bridgett thanks for tip, will look out for that pub if I'm in area

@John McCulloch as I said, I make no apologies for the London inclusions, there are more brewpubs concentrated here than anywhere else in country, felt that should be reflected in the piece, I work very hard in my work not to focus too much on London as I can see how that is often a problem with restaurant reviews et al, but in this case I thought it pertinent

@Carl Madigan I am a huge fan of what Dave does at Kelham Island and I consider him a friend, but what I was trying to do was point out some lesser known places, As for your comment on bone idle journalism, I actually take that quite personally. I live in London and know all the venues I wrote about well and, as I said earlier, I make no apologies for the number of London inclusions as it is justified on the grounds of concentration of brewpubs in the capital. Also, I find your suggestion of Marston's Old Empire surprising. Clear glass allows light to degrade the very delicate hop oils in beer, resulting in something called light strike. When dealing with beer styles like IPA you need to put them in brown glass or you lose all the aroma and nuances of the beer. Perhaps if you wish to be professionally insulting, doing so from a position of genuine knowledge would be a better place to start?

@Matt Carter I'm afraid there are always going to be omissions in this kind of piece that will upset people - I will however make it a point to try and visit the Fur & Feather next time I'm in that area

@Chris Roberts & Ross Atkinson thanks for the heads up on the Clarendon, I wasn't aware of it and will endeavour to visit when I'm next in the area and will be careful to not neglect the NE in the future!

@Barry Benjamin thanks for letting me know about that, I'll visit next time I'm in the vicinity

@S Ureham I am extremely anti-drink driving, I don't drink when I'm getting behind the wheel and think those who do are scum. I find your comment out of place and very odd, there's nothing in this piece that advocates drinking and driving and, having lost some friends in an accident caused by a drunk driver, find your comment quite unpleasant and unnecessary

If you're in Glasgow looking for a good pint, a pint of actually fresh beer, Brew Dog (mentioned below) and West Brewery next to Glasgow Green near enough the only places to go. The Clockwork takes 3rd place.
